Mounting a TV Above a Fireplace: Pros, Cons & Heat

~2 min read 401 words Practical installation guide

It can look fantastic — if the height and heat are handled right. Here is the honest version, from installers who do it every week.

Mounting a TV above the fireplace is one of the most requested setups we do — and one of the most misunderstood. It can look fantastic, but only if the height and heat are handled correctly. Here is an honest look at the pros, the cons, and how to do it safely.

The pros

  • It saves space and centers the room. The fireplace is usually the natural focal point, so the TV fits the layout.
  • Clean, premium look. With the wires concealed in the wall, an above-mantel TV looks built-in.
  • One clear viewing wall. No competing furniture or second focal point.

The cons to weigh first

  • Viewing height. Mantels often push the screen higher than the ideal seated eye level, which can mean looking up.
  • Heat. A working fireplace — especially wood-burning — sends heat and soot upward that can shorten a TV's lifespan.
  • Wiring. Running cables around or through masonry is harder than on a standard drywall wall.

How we handle the height

The fix for height is a pull-down or full-motion mount. These let the TV sit flush when off, then pull down and tilt toward your seats when you are watching. It is the single best upgrade for an above-fireplace install and dramatically improves comfort.

How we handle the heat

Heat is the part most DIY installs get wrong. A few guidelines we follow:

  • Check the fireplace type. Sealed gas and electric fireplaces are usually fine. Open wood-burning fireplaces are the riskiest.
  • Mind the mantel. A mantel that projects out several inches helps deflect heat away from the screen.
  • Measure the temperature. If the wall above the mantel gets too warm to hold your hand against comfortably, the TV needs more clearance or a different spot.

Wiring it cleanly

For a finished look we route the power and HDMI cables inside the wall where the construction allows, or use a low-profile raceway on masonry. Either way the goal is the same: no visible cords running down the front of the fireplace.

Is it right for you?

If your fireplace runs rarely, or it is gas or electric, an above-mantel TV is a great choice — especially with a full-motion mount. If you burn wood often, we will talk through whether a nearby wall is a safer home for the screen.

We install above-fireplace setups across the Carolinas and the Boston area. Get a free quote or read more about fireplace TV mounting.
