TV Mounting by Wall Type

The wall decides the hardware, the difficulty, and part of the price. A TV is only as safe as what it is anchored into, so matching the method to the wall is the most important safety step in any install. Here is how each common wall type is handled.

6 min read

Drywall

The most common wall. The TV must be anchored into the wood or metal studs behind the drywall — never into drywall alone for anything but the smallest TVs. When studs do not line up with the desired spot, a mounting plate or heavy-duty toggle anchors bridge the gap. Drywall is also the only wall that allows fully in-wall wire concealment. Cost: included in the base price.

Brick

Brick is strong but unforgiving — you drill into either the brick face or the mortar joints using masonry bits and sleeve/expansion anchors. Wires are hidden with a surface raceway since you cannot open a brick wall. What to expect is covered in our brick wall mounting post. Cost: +$20 add-on.

Concrete

Concrete is the most secure surface there is, and also the hardest to drill — it needs a hammer drill, masonry bits, and concrete anchors rated for the load. Done right, it holds any TV indefinitely. See our concrete wall installation guide. Cost: +$20 add-on.

Stone, tile & wood panel

Natural stone and tile require careful drilling to avoid cracking and the correct anchors for the material behind the surface. Wood-panel and shiplap walls still need to reach the studs behind them. Cost: stone +$20; wood panel included.

Above a fireplace

This is less about the surface and more about height and heat. We confirm the wall stays cool enough, use a tilting mount angled down for comfort, and conceal the wiring. Because each fireplace differs, these are quoted on site. See the above-fireplace service and the height guide.

Not sure what your wall is?

That is fine — most homeowners are not. Our installers identify the wall and use the correct method on site, and the wall type is part of your free quote so there are no surprises.

Frequently asked questions

Can you mount a TV on a brick wall?

Yes. We drill into the brick or mortar joints with masonry anchors and conceal the wires with a surface raceway. A small +$20 add-on applies.

Is it safe to mount a TV on drywall?

Yes, when anchored into the studs behind the drywall (or with heavy-duty plates/toggles where studs do not line up). Drywall alone is not safe for larger TVs.

Which wall is best for mounting a TV?

Concrete and brick are the most secure; drywall is the most flexible because it allows fully in-wall wire concealment. All are safe with the correct anchors.

Do harder walls cost more?

A small +$20 add-on applies to brick, concrete, and stone for the masonry anchors and extra drilling time. Drywall and wood panel are included.
